Background of the Study
Banki Local Government Area (LGA) in Borno State, Nigeria, shares a border with Cameroon and has long been affected by criminal activities such as smuggling, arms trafficking, and insurgent movements. Geopolitical tensions, particularly those related to cross-border trade, regional conflicts, and political instability, have contributed to the escalation of criminal activities in the area. This study aims to evaluate how these geopolitical tensions shape the dynamics of borderland criminal activities in Banki and assess their impact on security and governance in the region.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
The porous borders between Nigeria and neighboring countries, coupled with regional political instability and ongoing insurgency, have created opportunities for criminal networks to thrive in Banki LGA. The role of geopolitical tensions—such as cross-border political disputes, territorial claims, and economic disparities—has exacerbated these criminal activities. This study seeks to explore how these tensions fuel borderland crimes and undermine local security, governance, and economic stability.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the role of geopolitical tensions in promoting criminal activities in Banki LGA.

  • To assess the impact of cross-border trade and regional conflicts on criminal activities in the border region.

  • To recommend strategies for mitigating the influence of geopolitical tensions on borderland criminality in Banki.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How do geopolitical tensions between Nigeria and neighboring countries contribute to criminal activities in Banki LGA?

  • What role do cross-border trade, arms trafficking, and insurgency play in fueling criminal activities in Banki?

  • What strategies can be implemented to reduce criminal activities in Banki LGA caused by geopolitical tensions?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Geopolitical tensions, particularly cross-border conflicts and political instability, significantly contribute to the prevalence of criminal activities in Banki LGA.

  • The proliferation of arms and illicit trade across the border region exacerbates criminality in Banki.

  • Strengthening border security and enhancing regional cooperation will reduce criminal activities in Banki LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide critical insights into the relationship between geopolitical tensions and borderland criminal activities in Banki LGA. The findings will inform policy recommendations aimed at improving border security, enhancing cross-border cooperation, and curbing illicit trade and criminal behavior in the region.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Banki LGA and examine the role of geopolitical factors in shaping criminal activities. Limitations include the difficulty in obtaining accurate data on illegal activities and the challenges of assessing the full scope of geopolitical influences on local security.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Geopolitical Tensions: Political conflicts or rivalries between neighboring countries or regions that impact governance, security, and economic stability.

  • Borderland Criminal Activities: Illegal activities that occur in areas near national borders, such as smuggling, trafficking, and insurgency.

  • Cross-Border Trade: The movement of goods and services between countries across their borders, which can sometimes facilitate illicit activities.
